I’m so glad I didn’t let OCD hold me back because I can’t imagine my life without Abed and Swiper. It’s never too late to start taking your life back from OCD. A year or so ago, Howie shared his background about his partnership with us at NOCD, a virtual therapy provider that specializes in offering people with OCD and related conditions evidence-based treatment. You might have even seen our commercials on TV! Thanks to the awareness we've raised together and the peer-reviewed outcomes achieved, we have been able to partner with insurance companies like Cigna, Kaiser Permanente, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, many Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, and many others to offer over 130 million people in the United States access to OCD specialty therapy. To put this into context, just 5 years ago, insurance coverage for OCD specialty care was non-existent for most people with the condition. Although we have more work to do to increase coverage to 100% for all people with OCD and related conditions in the US and beyond, we find this major milestone to be exciting for the OCD community! If you or a loved one is looking for evidence-based treatment for OCD and ERP, be sure to check out nocd.com to learn more. You can get started by simply booking a free 15-minute call. #OCD #realocd #anxietyrecovery #ocdrecovery | A year or so ago, Howie shared his background about his partnership with us at NOCD, a virtual therapy provider that specializes in offering people with OCD and related conditions evidence-based treatment. "I don't have OCD! I don't triple check things. I'm not scared of germs'' When I got diagnosed with OCD I was in complete denial. I had been struggling with DARK intrusive thoughts about self harm. Truly. I didn't want to harm myself. I had no intention of ever doing it, but the thoughts would pop up in my mind for HOURS a day. We all have them. "what would happen if I jumped? What would happen if I swerved my car." The difference for someone who doesn't struggle with OCD is the thought is just a thought. It comes and goes. Those who struggle with OCD, a thought is NOT just a thought. It's a feeling, it's tricky, it loops in your mind for HOURS. My OCD thoughts got in my way of life. To the point I couldn't focus at work, the gym or my kids' sports. I was in constant fear of my mind. I would research this for hours. "What if this means I'm crazy." "What if I am a danger to myself.' I would constantly ask my therapist "I'm not crazy right?" I share this in full vulnerability because I wish I had known what was happening to me. Looking back at my life, I have always struggled with OCD. I get a thought in my mind, or a topic and I will not stop thinking about it. I will research until I am blue in the face. I will constantly ask people for their reassurance. THIS is OCD! I used to call it "driven" or "determined" because it wasn't dark or scary thoughts. However looking back, it was OCD. My therapist said to me "I think you have OCD. I can give you a test to determine, but I am positive that's what your thoughts are." Sure enough, she was right. She wasn't specialized in OCD, so that's when I went to find help and came across NOCD. I can not tell you how impactful finding them has been for my life. If you would have told me over a year ago I have the tools to no longer let OCD rule my life, I would think you were an alien! But I write this, full transparency, no longer struggling to the degree I was. I encourage anyone who is struggling with thoughts like I did, or maybe a different subtype (I didn't know subtypes were a thing- sexuality, hoarding, contamination, etc) PLEASE talk about it, get help. Life on the other side is so damn worth it! @NOCD | "I don't have OCD! I don't triple check things. I'm not scared of germs'' When I got diagnosed with OCD I was in complete denial. Anything can become a compulsion, and this is by no means an exhaustive list. OCD compulsions can be divided into two categories: behavioral compulsions, where the compulsions are physical things we do, such as checking or confessing, or mental compulsions, that can be trickier to spot. Mental compulsions are the thought patterns we use to relieve the anxiety caused by intrusive thoughts, such as mentally reviewing a memory or trying to argue with your intrusive thoughts.
